“Throughout the Concert, Kaufman and the TSO are graced with the mellifluous voice of Whitney Claire Kaufman and two of her performances were my personal highlights from the concert. Her rendition of When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio accompanied only by a piano elicited goosebumps and I absolutely loved hearing sing Through the Eyes of Love, a song that was deleted from the final cut of Mary Poppins as Walt Disney did not like the idea of this character singing a love song.”

Ms. Kaufman was a sparkling presence at the Friday night performance (both vocally and visually)…Ms. Kaufman’s degree is in theater performance, so it’s no surprise that she brings an actor’s sensibility to Great American Songbook Christmas songs like “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (with the more optimistic lyrics that seem to have replaced the wistful originals). Her singing throughout the evening showed the kind of emotional investment in the lyrics that made these old standards feel fresh; it also communicated newer songs like David Foster’s “Grown-Up Christmas List” most effectively.

As the sensitive and fanciful Olive, Santa Barbara newcomer Whitney Claire Kaufman paints a vivid portrait of a lonely girl who loves language and amuses herself with its whims in the absence of attentive parents. The newly blossoming connection between her and William is charmingly played by both actors, and is perhaps the most memorable element of the show.

Vocalist Whitney Claire Kaufman joined the orchestra for several numbers, the strongest of which was “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Kaufman’s tuneful singing and Broadway sensibilities were perfect for the joyful song and her comfort on stage imbued the song with her own Christmas spirit.

Whitney Claire Kaufman performs the theme from Wild is the Wind in a more pops-like style. This works well in the smooth jazzy backdrop of Nan Schwartz’s lush arrangement. It is a rather unusually designed song that is almost stream of consciousness. Her performance is still stunning.

Mr. Kaufman’s gifted daughter, Whitney Claire Kaufman, was the evening’s guest vocalist, in this theater where she previously performed as part of the national touring production of “Mama Mia.” She fared beautifully, in tone and phrasing, on songs ranging from the first Oscar-winning song, “The Continental,” (from “the Gay Divorcee”) to “The Trolley Song” (“Meet Me in St. Louis”), “When You Wish Upon a Star” (“Pinocchio”) and the more modern “Colors of the Wind” (“Pocahontas”), with “Que Sera. Sera” and “Over the Rainbow”, for good classic measure.

“Colors of the Wind” from “Pocahontas” had the right strength of pride as sung by Whitney Claire Kaufman. Her love duet with Johnson from “Beauty and the Beast” was a high point of the concert, one in which the singers were beautifully attuned to each other and the images on the video screen.
